INTRODUCTION
In this publication we continue tracing the railway line from Balaklava towards Brinkworth and Gladstone. The first two stations, Halbury and Hoyleton, were both on the former narrow gauge Port Wakefield to Hoyle’s Plains Tramway. Opening in 1870 it was the first isolated country railway line north of Adelaide and was built to service an already established agricultural district. Using Port Wakefield as its port, produce could be railed from Hoyleton, Halbury and Balaklava for shipment. This was initially done by using horse drawn wagons but it changed to steam power from the 1876 as loads increased.
