INTRODUCTION

From its base in Bradford, United Kingdom, and a later works situated at Rocklea in the southern suburbs of Brisbane, the prominent builder English Electric constructed diesel electric locomotives for many operators in Australia and overseas. English Electric locomotives operated on the state systems of Queensland, South Australia, Victoria, Tasmania and Western Australia, perhaps the largest operator being the Queensland Railways. While not a numerically large fleet, the Tasmanian English Electric diesel pool once dominated the ‘Apple Isle’, that state being noteworthy for the introduction of diesels on its main line as early as 1950.
