INTRODUCTION
It gives me a great sense of satisfaction to write the introduction to complete the NR Early History Series books. Such a voluminous series in unique. Apart from the once fourteen-member EL class, no other class of locomotive has been treated so comprehensively as the NR class. To have presented a locomotive class history whilst so much of its history lies ahead is also somewhat different. Virtually all other locomotive class histories have been written in the class’ twilight years or after most of the units have been withdrawn or scrapped. by then, after years of service, early operational details maybe difficult to access with much of it sketchy or not having been recorded. Such is not the case with the NR class.
