“Narrow Gauge Memories – The Experience”

By Steve McNicol

Paperback cover 46 pages black/white photos

INTRODUCTION

This is the fourth and final book in the Narrow Gauge Memories series. This series started out simply as a ‘nostalgic’ project, a look back to the last days of steam, but soon grew out of all proportion. The scope of the series broadened and this seemed to be paralleled by the growth of interest in the narrow gauge.

Narrow Gauge Memories – the Experience  is a look at what it was like to drive and fire steam locomotives on the Peterborough Division narrow gauge. How to keep time, the language of the footplate, running repairs and locomotive preparation/stabling duties are all part of your introduction to life on the footplate. Rather than just quote from the rule book we have tried to give this book the personal touch. To do this we have drawn on the vast knowledge and experience of two well respected railway personalities, Lionel Noble and Tim Jenkins. Both spent many years at Peterborough and had worked their way up through the ranks. Both were also keen to share their experience with others and we are pleased to be able to pass on their legacy to future generations.
