INTRODUCTION

If someone was to ask ‘what locomotive would you consider synonymous with the S.A.R. narrow gauge?’ The answer would be unquestionably ‘the T class’. Although looking ancient and rather ill proportioned in their latter years they are remembered with great affection and admiration by enthusiasts and railwaymen alike. Their individual beat, loose connecting rods, dirty smoke boxes and sediment stained boilers were a far cry from those immaculately kept machines that first graced the rails in the early 1900s.

In this, the first in a proposed set of three publications tracing the history of the T class, we look at their early history from 1903 to 1939.
